Orchestrating the process might require some planning, but once you know that you're doing it that way you are all set

For those of you who have been wondering when you were going to get around to learning how to perform the piano, you're in for a treat.  Just about anyone whose ever played the piano can learn how to orchestrate them with very little effort.  You can see several examples of how I am orchestral playing on YouTube.

The same is true of guitar playing.  I have been playing with the guitar for about 10 years now.  I have done some learning on the fly and tried to get as good of playing as I could by studying and doing what I had already figured out.  I figured it out by trial and error and then just practiced in between lessons.  Today I would say I have pretty much figured it out.  I am very good and I know what I am doing.  I have even gotten better because I have kept my ear to the ground for any new knowledge that might arise.  So, if a guitarist asks a question you want to know how to answer then listen.

If you're going to give up your car keys and just start playing your lute then you might like the following tip... Just make it a rule to always sit down for 2 hours every day or else you will just look like an idiot and get frustrated every day. Just get up and play something for at least 15 to 30 minutes.  You will have a far greater appreciation for the instrument and you'll be able to give your best effort, even if you don't feel like it.

Here are some other tips for beginners...

There are many options available to you and I would suggest you learn them all.  For example... You can start learning to play piano or guitar but you have to be honest with yourself and just start with a new piece.  There are piano tablatures available to you for pretty much all keys.  A little practice will get you a good feel for those pieces.  If you want to become a better guitarist then you have an extremely large amount of choices available to you.  It is easy to get complacent especially in this age of technology.   Try playing an instrument in various musical scales.  This will allow you to see the scale at an easier level and make learning easier.  It is also good to study in an open tuning.  This is also a great option that is not too expensive.
